The Pretty Things und die Rolling Stones

Die Beatles waren die Lieblinge der Mütter, die Stones ein noch zu ertragendes Übel, aber die Pretty Things wurden gehasst! Zu laut, zu schmuddelig und überhaupt nicht nett. Die Bravo hat sich wahrscheinlich noch nicht einmal getraut, sie als abschreckendes Beispiel zu nennen.
Ähnlich wie die Rolling Stones (Muddy Waters) benannten sich die Pretty Things nach dem Song eines ihrer Blues Idole, Bo Diddleys "Pretty Thing". Durch Dick Taylor bestand eine Verbindung zu den Stones. Taylor war vor Bill Wyman ihr erster Bassist.
Der Kern der Pretty Things bestand aus Phil May und Dick Taylor. Die restliche Mannschaft wechselte beinahe nach jeder Platte. Die Pretty Things entstanden in der Gegend von Kent. Später ging man nach London.

The Pretty Things - Erfinder der Rockoper

Die Platten Rosalyn / Big Boss Man und "Don't bring me down" kamen 1964 bis in die Charts. "Don't bring me down" schaffte es sogar in den USA auf den Index zu kommen - der Text war nicht sauber genug.
Nach einer weiteren Hit Single - "Honey I need" - begannen die ersten Umbesetzungen.
Nach den ersten beiden Alben folgte eine Schaffenspause von zwei Jahren (in einer Bio war zu lesen ...there was a period of low moral...)
Nach der Schaffenspause folgte das Album "Emotions". Phil May schrieb 1968 die Story S.F.Sorrow und vertonte sie als erste Rock Oper der Geschichte. Es wird gemunkelt:
Pete Townshend bekam die Platte kurz vor deren Veröffentlichung. Er soll  auch gleichen Studio und zur gleichen Zeit mit den Who etwas aufgenommen haben. Vier Tage sperrte er sich ein und hörte pausenlos S.F. Sorrow, danach komponierte er "Tommy". S.F. Sorrow wurde in GB zum Flop und Tommy zum Hit.
Als Sorrow 15 Monate später in den USA erschien, wurde es als Plagiat von Tommy beschimpft.
1971 verließ Dick Taylor für einige Jahre die Pretty Things.
Das Album "Parachute" wurde 1971 zum Album des Jahres vom Rolling Stone gekürt (wie sich die Zeiten ändern...).

The Pretty Things und die Yardbirds

1976 erklärte Phil May die Pretty Things als aufgelöst. Die Begründung war einfach und verständlich. Phil May von all diesem Unsinn die Nase voll. Die Lust kam 1978 für eine kurze Zeit zurück. 1980 änderte er endgültig seine Meinung. Die Pretty Things haben bis heute Bestand.
May und Taylor traten unter dem Namen Zac Zolan & Electric Banana im Littel Venice in London auf (in dieser Zeit entstand Live at the Heartbreak Hotel) und machten Musik für das Fernsehen .
1989 wurde mit dem Cover des Barry McGuire Song "Eve Of Destruction" versucht ein Hit zu landen.
In Deutschland wurde "Out Of The Island" aufgenommen. Kritiker lobten zwar die Scheibe, der große Verkauf fand allerdings nicht statt.
Aus meiner Sicht verkörperte das Album nicht die "wahren" Pretty Things. Ein echter Höhepunkt war das Zusammentreffen in Chicago mit Jim McCarty von den Yardbirds . Den Yardbirds/Pretty Things Session zuzuhören macht einfach Spaß.
1993 verklagten die Pretty Things ihre Plattenfirmen EMI und Polygram wegen falscher Tantiemenabrechnung. Keine Ahnung was dabei herauskam. Wenn ihr es wisst - bitte eine Mail zum Rockzirkus.

Die Ahnung ist gekommen: Mittlerweile gewannen die Pretty Things den Prozess.

Ziemlich kuriose Aufnahmesessions von zwei komplett unterschiedlichen Besetzungen. Irgendwie wusste man im Pretties-Lager wohl auch nicht so recht was man mit dieses Tapes (Demos?) anfangen sollte.
Seite 1 kommt mit bluesrockig eingefärbtem Material wie "Good Times" und "Easily Done" mit schönen EP- und Hammond-Einlagen daher.
Seite 2: Auf "Do My Stuff" wandelt Phil May auf den Spuren der Byrds, "Whiskey Song" hingegen hätte auf einer Lindisfarne-Scheibe drauf sein können. Zum Abschluss markiert man mit "Take Me Home" unspektakulären Spät-70er-Rock.
Der Hammer war natürlich dieses "trashige" Cover welches wohl verhinderte dass die Scheibe nicht im üblichen Sortiment der Plattenläden auftauchte.
