Peter Hammill - VdGG und Solo

Peter Joseph Andrew Hammill gründete 1967 mit Chris Judge Smith in Manchester die legendäre Gruppe Van der Graaf Generator.
Ab 1971 veröffentliche Hammill neben der Arbeit mit Van der Graaf Generator auch Soloalben, bei denen die Begleitband in den ersten Jahren vorwiegend aus Musikern von Van der Graaf Generator bestand.
Musikalisch sind die Soloalben weniger experimentell als die Musik von Van der Graaf Generator.
Textlich bearbeitet Hammill wie auch schon mit VdGG seine „Standardthemen“ – die Beziehungen zwischen Mann und Frau, Kommunikations- und Erkenntnisprobleme etc..
1975 erscheint Nadir´s Big Chance, das von John Lydon (Sex Pistols) und Neil Young als erstes Punkalbum bezeichnet wird. Der Grund war wohl wegen des Textes auf der Plattenhülle, wo die Lieder als „beefy little punk songs“ bezeichnet wurden.
Fast jährlich veröffentlicht Hammill ein neues Album, wobei er musikalisch und textlich in den letzten Jahren wenig Abwechslung bietet.
Auf vielen Alben spielt Hammill fast alle Instrumente selbst, auf einigen eher ruhigen Alben begleitet er sich selbst auf dem Piano oder der Gitarre.
Hammill arbeitet auch immer wieder mit anderen Künstlern zusammen, z.B. Colin Scott, Robert Fripp, Peter Gabriel, David Cross, Alice, Moondog, Wolfram Huschke.
