Dr.Feelgood und Piano Red
John Wilkinson, genannt Wilko Johnson, und John 'The Big Figure' Martin
spielten bereits gemeinsam bei den Roamers. Piano Red hatte es ihnen mit
dem Song "Doctor Feel Good" angetan. Also wurde 1971 gemeinsam mit Lee
Brilleaux und John B. 'Sparko' Sparks die Spaß-Rock-Blues-Band Dr
Feelgood gegründet. So lautet eine weit verbreitete Legende. Der
Wahrheit mehr entspricht wohl, Wilko Johnson war ein Fan von Mick Green.
Mick Green spielte bei Johnny Kidd & The Pirates und die Pirates waren
auf der Insel eine Institution. Ein Song der Pirates nennt sich "Dr.
Feelgood" und dabei handelt es sich um den echten Namensgeber.
Heinz (Heinz Burt) ein Ex-Tornado. Er hatte 1963 seinen ersten Hit mit
"Just Like Eddie") gab ihnen den ersten Job als Begleitband.
Live war Dr Feelgood ein Erlebnis. Sie hielten sich an das Motto: "Blues
Had a Baby and They Named It Rock & Roll".
Der traditionelle Blues eines Bo Diddley, Wilie Dixon, John Lee Hooker,
Muddy Waters und anderen wurde konsequent in modernen Rock 'n' Roll
übersetzt.
Dr.Feelgood im Dingwall's Club
Die Spielfreude von Dr. Feelgood ist besonders auf ihren ersten Platten
nicht zu überhören. Die erste Single wurde 1974 im Dingwall's Club -
London - live aufgenommen. Bony Morony und Tequilla hießen die Songs.
Anfangs sollten sie sich wie eine Band aus den frühen 60er anhören, also
wurde der erste Longplayer "Down By The Jetty" zum Teil in Mono
aufgenommen.
1975 folgte das zweite Album "Malprice", diesmal in Stereo.
Dr. Feelgood machte sich bald in ganz Europa einen Namen als
Live-Power-Blues-Rock-Band.
"Stupidity", für mich ihr bestes Album, war der Konzertmitschnitt eines
Auftritts vom 08.11.75 im Kursaal von Southend.
Die Platte kam auf der Insel in den Charts bis auf Platz 5.

Eine Tour in den Staaten, sie traten im Vorprogramm von Lou Reed auf,
verlief gut, brachte aber keine Steigerung der Umsätze ihrer Platten in
den USA.
Die Erfolge in Europa dagegen wurden immer größer. Die Alben "Sneakin'
Suspicion" und "Be Seing You" fanden auf Anhieb ihren Platz in den
Charts.
Nach "Be Seing You" begannen die Probleme.
Wilko Johnson gründete eine eigene Band, die "Solid Senders". Bei den
Solid Senders wurde die gleiche Art Rock 'n' Roll gespielt wie bei Dr.
Feelgood. Die zwei Bands standen Ende der 70er Jahre in direkter
Konkurrenz.
Am 01.05.1979 hatten sie ihren Auftritt im Rockpalast. Wilko nahm 1980
mit Ian Dury & The Blockheads das Album "Laughter" auf. Bis heute ist
Wilko Johnson aktiv im Musikgeschäft tätig.
Dr. Feelgood und Henry McCulloch
Lange wurde ein Nachfolger von Wilko gesucht. Henry McCulloch (Spooky
Tooth, Wings) gehörte dazu und später John "Gypie" Mayo (Yardbirds).
Mit Gypie wurden noch ihre letzten Hits "Down At The Doctors" und "Milk
And Alcohol" und die Alben "Private Practice" und "On The Job"
aufgenommen.
"On The Job" wurde bereits von den Kritikern verrissen.
Dr.Feelgood verlor langsam an Beliebtheit.
Der ehrliche Rock war von der Zeit überholt worden, vielleicht fehlten
auch die Ideen.
Brilleaux, Sparks und Martin wechselten das Label und holten sich Johnny
Guitar von den "Count Bishops".
"Fast Woman & Slow Horses" entstand.
Diesmal gelobt von den Kritikern und verschmäht vom Publikum.
Der finanzielle Erfolg blieb aus und es musste etwas geschehen.
Dr. Feelgood und Lee Brilleaux
Lee Brilleaux warf die Gründungsmitglieder "The Big Figure" und Sparks
raus, vielleicht gingen sie auch freiwillig, und holte sich Buzz Barwell
und Pat McCulloch.
Das Ende vor Augen stieg auch Johnny Guitar aus und Brilleaux krempelte
den Doktor jetzt vollständig um.
Die Besetzung auf dem von Mike Vernon produziertem Album "Doctor's
Order" war:

Die Platten verkauften sich zwar nicht, aber Live war Dr. Feelgood immer
noch gefragt.
1986 kam der Steve Marriott Gitarrist Steve Walwyn für Russel in die
Band.

Es erschien wieder einmal ein Live-Mitschnitt "Live In London" und das
Album "Primo" und eine Umbesetzung.
Diesmal der Bass in Person von Dave Bonze.
Nach dem "Feelgood Factor" erkrankte Brilleaux an den Lymphgefäßen.
Unter ärztlicher Aufsicht wurde sein letztes Album "Down The Doctors"
aufgenommen.
Am 07.04.1994 starb Lee Brilleaux an Kehlkopfkrebs. Er wurde 41 Jahre
alt.
Pete Gage und später Robert Kane übernahmen den Gesang.
Zwei Alben wurden noch produziert, aber ohne Lee Brilleaux waren sie
noch schwerer zu verkaufen.
Dr. Feelgood ist immer noch auf Tour und wer guten alten Rock aus den
60ern und 70ern mag, der wird an den Auftritten seinen Spaß haben.
